Death in an Instant: Trackways, Graveyards & the Flood Record

This is Part 3 of the Creation & Origins series. Part 2 — The Assumptions Under the Dating looked at how we date rock. This post turns to what’s actually buried in it.

Walk into almost any natural history museum and you’ll see a story, not just a display of bones. Paleontologist Marcus Ross makes a point of visiting them anyway — as he puts it, for a working paleontologist a museum hall full of dinosaurs is a bit like a zoo, minus the smell. The bones themselves are just data. What the museum sells you, usually without saying so, is which of two very different stories those bones are evidence for.

Two Ways to Read the Same Bone Room

The conventional story is developmental: the fossil record as a timeline of life gradually diversifying and complexifying over hundreds of millions of years. The flood-geology story is completely different in kind, not just in timeline: the fossil record as a graveyard — a snapshot of a single, complex, already-diverse pre-Flood world, caught and buried in the act of dying. Same bones. Radically different claims about what they’re a record of.

Ross’s case for the graveyard reading starts with scale and pattern, not any single spectacular find. Fossils tend to cluster in dense, distinct layers — what he calls graveyard on top of graveyard on top of graveyard — with untold numbers of organisms destroyed together in a layer that, geologically, looks like it formed in minutes, sometimes seconds, not gradually over thousands of years. Marine reptiles like mosasaurs turn up not just in ocean basins but distributed across continents, on mountains, far from any modern sea — which Ross reads as evidence of a force capable of picking up marine ecosystems and throwing them onto land, violently and at scale.

The honest mainstream counter here leans on plate tectonics and enormous stretches of time: continents have hosted shallow inland seas repeatedly across deep history, and those seas later drained or were uplifted into today’s mountains and plains — no single global flood required, just ordinary tectonic processes operating over a very long timeline. That’s a coherent, well-evidenced answer for marine fossils on land generally. It’s the next piece of evidence where the conventional explanation gets noticeably harder to make work cleanly.

The Trackways Problem

This is the sharpest, most specific claim in this entire series, and it deserves to be isolated and slowed down.

Across several major fossil groups — trilobites, amphibians, dinosaurs — Ross points to a consistent, striking pattern: the very first evidence of a given type of creature in the fossil record isn’t a body. It’s a trackway. Footprints show up in the rock record before any bones, teeth, or shells belonging to the animal that made them. Read through a conventional deep-time lens, that’s a strange result: it implies millions of years passing between an animal walking across mud and that same kind of animal eventually leaving a body behind to fossilize, which raises an obvious question — if the animal existed long enough ago to leave footprints, where are its bones from that same era?

Ross’s read is that the pattern is telling us something different: there’s no real time gap between when a track was left and when its maker was buried. A trackway itself is a fragile thing — walk on a beach and your footprints are gone within hours, destroyed by wind, rain, or the next tide. For a trackway to survive into the fossil record at all, whatever covered and preserved it had to arrive very fast. Track, then burial, in short order — which is exactly what a catastrophic, sediment-laden floodwater event would produce, and not what slow, ordinary sedimentation would.

Prediction vs. Accommodation, Again

This is the cleanest example in the series so far of the distinction this blog keeps coming back to. The flood model doesn’t just tolerate the trackways-before-bodies pattern — it predicts it directly: rapid, catastrophic burial should produce exactly this ordering, track and maker buried together in the same short window, with no long gap between the two. The conventional model has to accommodate the same pattern after encountering it, through a different explanation entirely: differential preservation. Trace fossils (tracks, burrows, trails) form and preserve under a wider range of conditions than body fossils do, and body-fossilization is a genuinely rare event requiring a fairly narrow set of circumstances. On that reading, the “gap” isn’t a gap in time at all — it’s a gap in preservation odds. The animals were there the whole time; their tracks just fossilized far more easily than their bones did, so tracks show up first in the rock record purely as an artifact of what survives, not because there’s an actual population gap.

That’s a real, serious answer, not a dodge — differential preservation between trace and body fossils is well documented independent of this debate entirely. Whether it’s sufficient to explain a pattern this consistent, across this many separate animal groups, is exactly where the genuine disagreement sits. This is, as far as this series has found so far, the single most under-answered thorn against the conventional timeline — not because no one has a response, but because the response is a general preservation-bias argument being asked to do a lot of work across a very specific, repeated pattern.

A Graveyard With No Children In It

One specific bone bed sharpens the burial-pattern argument further. In northern Montana, a single deposit stretching over a mile contains roughly 30 million fossil fragments, representing more than 10,000 individual Maiasaura — all of them adults or sub-adults between roughly nine and twenty-three feet long. Not one juvenile or hatchling was found among them.

Read one way, that’s a snapshot of a herd fleeing rising floodwaters, with the younger, slower animals left behind and buried elsewhere — a catastrophic, sudden die-off. The mainstream alternative points to something observed in living herd animals today: age segregation is a real, documented behavior, where juveniles and adults travel in separate groups at certain times of year for entirely ordinary ecological reasons — nothing catastrophic required, just seasonal herd structure. Both readings are plausible from the bone bed alone; distinguishing between them usually comes down to finer-grained sedimentological detail this post won’t try to adjudicate. It’s included here as an honest example of a specific, striking data point that doesn’t settle the argument by itself, whichever direction you’re inclined to read it.

Where This Leaves Us

The fossil record is not neutral raw data waiting for a story — both paradigms bring one to it, same as with dating methods in the last post. But the trackways pattern is the strongest, most specific thorn this series has found so far against the conventional picture: not because the mainstream position has no answer, but because its answer (preservation bias) is a general principle being stretched to explain a very particular, repeated ordering. That’s worth sitting with, honestly, whichever paradigm you walked in holding.
