It’s no mystery why the unbelieving world has sought to commandeer Christmas. They have sought to turn it into a mere sentimental, quaint, nothing, by cluttering it up with all sorts of meaningless ideas and activities. Ideas to distract and sooth the unbelievers mind that nothing profound is to be had at Christmas.
The truth is, Christmas is very intellectually confrontational. Do you believe God came near in His Son? If not, I don’t know what there is to celebrate at “Christ”mas, do you?
Christmas is a celebration of an extraordinary, humanly unbelievable, jolting reality. God the Father sends His Son from heaven to earth to save the world.
Anything less, is to miss the point.
From the unbelieving world’s perspective, missing the point seems to be the goal of Christmas. Don’t bother me with profound stories of incarnation and the Son of God coming to be born of woman. I would rather have anything else except that. Reindeer, fat Santa, elves on a shelf, anything of frivolity will do. Distract me to death. That’s what I want for Christmas. Distraction.
God will give the unbelieving world their Christ-less, distracted and frivolous day, one day, but not today. Today we celebrate Christ because it is still about the miraculous reality of Jesus, the King of the World, who secured salvation for all whom the Father has given Him. We are His inheritance and He is our most precious gift.
He came for you and I, so Merry “Christ”mas to all and to all a good night.
