Diabetic Awareness: Ketosis vs. Ketoacidosis – Clearing the Air on My Keto Journey

I’m at 206 lbs (43 down from 249 since Nov ’25), thriving on whole-food keto + fasting + creatine + Hume Band tracking. Energy steady, mind sharp, metabolic wins stacking up thanks to those six videos (Dr. Boz, Bikman, Ede, etc.).

But I had this question early in my process: “Isn’t keto risky because of ketoacidosis?”

No—for most of us.

Nutritional ketosis (what I’m in) is safe & beneficial. Body burns fat → moderate ketones (0.5–3 mmol/L) as clean fuel. Blood sugar normal/low, pH balanced. Regulated by insulin—hunger crushed, focus up, like my “different person” feeling.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is totally different—a life-threatening emergency, mostly in type 1 diabetes from severe insulin lack. Ketones skyrocket (10–25+ mmol/L), blood sugar very high (>250 mg/dL), blood turns acidic (pH <7.3). Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing, fruity breath, confusion → ER needed fast (insulin + fluids).

Key differences:

  • Ketosis: Controlled, safe, low/moderate ketones, normal glucose/pH
  • DKA: Uncontrolled, high ketones + high glucose + acidosis
Aspect Ketosis (Nutritional/Physiological) Ketoacidosis (Diabetic Ketoacidosis – DKA)
Cause Low carb intake, fasting, ketogenic diet Severe insulin deficiency (usually type 1 diabetes), high blood sugar + no insulin to regulate
Blood Ketone Levels 0.5–3 mmol/L (sometimes up to 5 mmol/L) Typically 10–25 mmol/L (much higher, often >10 mmol/L)
Blood pH Normal (7.35–7.45) Acidic (usually <7.3, often severe acidosis)
Blood Glucose Normal or low Very high (often >250 mg/dL)
Symptoms Mild “keto flu” (fatigue, headache, bad breath), often none or positive energy Severe: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid breathing, fruity breath, confusion, dehydration, coma risk
Health Impact Safe for most healthy people; potentially beneficial Medical emergency; can lead to coma or death if untreated
Who It Affects Anyone on low-carb/keto diet or fasting Primarily people with diabetes (especially type 1); rare in others

Non-diabetics rarely get DKA from keto alone—body self-regulates. If diabetic (esp. type 1), monitor closely & consult doc before strict low-carb. Type 2? Usually safer, but check meds.

I’m sharing because this changed my life for the better—ketosis is metabolic freedom, not danger.

The Six Videos That Transformed My Keto Journey

Dr. Annette Bosworth (Dr. Boz) & Insulin Resistance

“Insulin Doctor: This Is The First Sign Of Dementia! The Shocking Link Between Keto & Brain Decline!” on The Diary Of A CEO. Dr. Boz explains insulin resistance as the root of weight, inflammation, and brain issues; introduces the Dr. Boz Ratio, Sardine Challenge, and keto’s ketone-powered brain benefits. Sparked your 18.6 lbs drop in 3 days via 18/6 fasting.

Dr. Benjamin Bikman on Insulin & Shrinking Fat Cells

“Insulin Expert: How To ‘Drain’ Your Liver of Fat (Do This!)” on The Diary Of A CEO. Bikman debunks calorie myths, showing high insulin traps fat and burdens the liver; lowering it via keto shrinks cells, boosts ketones for hunger control and metabolism, and frames cancer as sugar-driven. Shifted you from calorie counting to insulin focus.

Dr. Georgia Ede on Keto for the Brain

“The Keto Psychiatrist: What Keto Is Really Doing To Your Body! Can It Cure 43% Of Mental Illness?” on The Diary Of A CEO. Dr. Ede covers keto’s metabolic psychiatry benefits—high remission rates for depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, and ADHD through reduced inflammation, stable ketone fuel, and neurotransmitter balance. Transformed your mood, focus, and energy.

Creatine Benefits (Dr. Ben Bikman)

“Creatine Demystified: Brain, Muscle & Metabolic Benefits with Dr. Ben Bikman” on Ben Bikman’s channel. Explains creatine as an ATP buffer for muscle strength, recovery, cognition, memory, and insulin sensitivity; debunks kidney myths and recommends 3–5g daily. Became a game-changer for your workouts and fasting-day sharpness on keto.

Dr. Andrew Koutnik on the New Era of Keto + Adaptation

“The New Era of Keto (it’s changed more than you think)” on Thomas DeLauer. Dr. Koutnik details adaptation phases (keto flu, 4-week flexibility, 8+ weeks mitochondrial gains), fat oxidation with exercise, whole-food emphasis, and insulin’s role in obesity. Guided your effortless 18/6, 24-hour fasts, and full fat-adaptation.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick on Longevity

“Dr. Rhonda Patrick: Fasting, Creatine, Brain Performance & Longevity Breakthroughs | PBD #740” on PBD Podcast. Covers biological vs. chronological age, vigorous exercise reversing heart aging, fasting/ketones for resilience, and lifestyle’s role in happiness/longevity. Tied your protocol together, with Hume Health Band tracking proving real progress.
