This new series follows a post I made a few weeks ago about how MAGA became America’s new common sense middle ground. In this series we examine a broad conservative coalition that has formed around shared priorities: rule of law, national sovereignty, secure borders with legal immigration, merit-based opportunity, protection of the family, fiscal responsibility (ideal but sometimes not realized), energy abundance, health freedom, and results-oriented governance. These priorities often find expression in the America First approach associated with the MAGA movement. These are imperfect ideals but better than the left has to offer by a long shot.
The coalition includes individuals who enter through different doorways. Some arrive through fiscal restraint and limited government. Others through national sovereignty and secure borders. Still others through defense of merit, color-blind justice, strong families, or resistance to cultural ideologies that contradict creation order. Participants include Reformed and evangelical Christians, Catholics, Jews, classical liberals, former Democrats from working-class backgrounds, and secular patriots committed to safe communities, good jobs, and accountable government.
This diversity reflects common grace at work (Matthew 5:45). The coalition is a political and cultural alliance, not a church. It unites around concrete threats—open borders that strain resources, elite capture that evades accountability, ideologies that defy creation order, and bureaucratic expansion that erodes liberty—and around shared goods such as safer streets, stronger families, and opportunity for workers.
The libertarian sees the administrative state as a threat to rights. The economic nationalist sees workers abandoned by globalism. The cultural traditionalist sees the family under assault. The former working-class Democrat sees the need for practical governance over ideology. No doorway requires a Reformed confession. Yet the resulting policies align closely with the biblical framework this series presents.
Scripture and the Reformed tradition instruct that these biblical principles supply the ordering logic for the entire movement. They function as the foundation and structural beams of a house: any door may lead inside, but the same beams support the roof. The convictions drawn from Acts 17:26 (nations and boundaries), Romans 13 (the magistrate’s sword), Genesis 1–2 (creation order), Deuteronomy 1:17 (impartial justice), and 1 Samuel 8 (limited government)—together with Kuyper’s sphere sovereignty—provide coherence, guardrails, and explanatory power.
They ensure coherence by supplying a shared moral grammar: justice is impartial, authority is delegated, spheres remain distinct, work possesses dignity. They serve as guardrails by balancing ordered love (1 Timothy 5:8; Galatians 6:10) with justice for the stranger and by limiting the state without dissolving it. They supply explanatory power because policies succeed when they align with God’s design for the world: total depravity accounts for institutional failure; creation order accounts for the fruitfulness of strong families and honest labor.
This instructs Christians that cooperation within the coalition does not require uniformity of belief. The doorway may vary, yet the foundation remains the same. Kuyper’s insight applies directly: Christ claims every square inch, yet in the civil realm He governs through common-grace structures that unbelievers can recognize and support.
