A Poem
then the seventh that seals the list.
The ladder Solomon climbs is no gentle ascent;
it is a deliberate climb toward what God cannot overlook.
Each rung names a fracture in the human heart,
each escalation adds weight until the seventh lands
like a final stone upon the scale.
Here the graded numerical pattern returns,
no longer celebrating wonder or tiny wisdom,
but exposing the very attitudes that tremble the earth —
still carrying the self-similar shape of creation’s order,
fracture’s accumulating weight,
and the longing for restoration’s decisive final step.
Digging Deeper
Proverbs 6:16-19 brings the graded numerical ladder into the heart of Solomon’s wisdom teaching.
There are six things the Lord hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
a false witness who pours out lies,
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
The 6/7 escalation follows the same ancient pattern: the first number sets the rhythm, the second heightens it, and the seventh item receives the full rhetorical weight.
Inside the seven items lies a subtle internal symmetry. The outer pair (haughty eyes / person who stirs up conflict) bookends the list with pride and division. The very center — “a heart that devises wicked schemes” — reveals that the root of every evil is an inward orientation against God’s order.
Why does this form matter?
Escalation of Fracture
The step from six to seven shows how sin accumulates until it reaches a point God will not ignore.
Order in Moral Warning
The memorable, measured way restores a sense of divine order even while naming disorder.
Practical Safeguard
The numerical pattern equips us to recognize these attitudes in real time and choose the opposite path.
Training Your Eye
Whenever a numerical escalation appears, pause and ask these three simple questions:
