But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Galatians 4:4–5 (NASB)
Consider the “fullness of time.” This is far more than a convenient moment or even the “right” time. The hour was full—brimming, overflowing with divine purpose. It was the long-appointed season for the eternal covenant of redemption, decreed in glory among Father, Son, and Holy Spirit before the foundation of the world.
From Scripture’s glimpses into the mind of God, we may reverently imagine the intra-Trinitarian conversation on the eve of that fullness something like this. (Of course, God’s will is one, undivided, and timeless; He does not deliberate as we do. Yet in condescending to our weakness, Scripture clothes eternal truths in human likeness—just as we speak of God’s “right hand” though He has no hands, to signify His sovereign power.)
“The time We decreed has arrived. All is prepared for Your redeeming work, My Son. What You accomplish will echo through every age: from those We positioned to bring history to this point, to those whose distant descendants have not yet drawn breath. You will redefine history, for You are its very purpose.
“Recall Our promise to Abraham: through You all nations will be blessed. Our people are not confined to the children of one land. Eternity is already set in their hearts; the nations are Ours. The small territory We pledged will prove too narrow—we claim the whole earth. This was always Our design, though some have thought too small.
“Many have misunderstood. Sin clouds the mind. We will dispel the fog.
“When You come, teach them the breadth of Our kingdom. Show how the modest promises were signposts to far greater, breathtaking realities.
“Reveal heaven as fully as human eyes can bear, and We will bring heaven to them as promised.
“Your mother will be Mary. We chose her together, just as We chose every one of Your people—a vast, innumerable multitude, each one infinitely precious. We know them by name; the hairs of their heads are numbered, and for some We need not count at all.
“You will live under the Law that perfectly mirrors Our holy character. When Your mission is finished—when You have filled the time with all We appointed—You will take upon Your sinless human nature the full penalty of Their sin.
“In that hour I will turn My face away, for You will bear what cannot coexist with My gaze. You will cry, ‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?’ The spiritual anguish will eclipse the physical torment. Yet this is the only path for Us to be both just and the justifier. Your obedience will reconcile them to Us forever.
“You will drink the cup of death that belongs to them and remove it from them entirely. When Our righteous wrath is satisfied, We will shatter death’s power. Three days will stand between crucifixion and resurrection—yet in that brief span You will be the greater Ark, preserving the whole family of God through judgment.
“You will bestow upon them the peace We have purchased: freedom from sin and shame, the curse that has bound humanity since Adam and Eve chose autonomy over allegiance in the garden.
“Holy Spirit, Your role is vital. Overshadow Mary and conceive in her the eternal Son. Remain with Our people to the end, applying every benefit of His finished work to their hearts. Your ministry will be miraculous; scoffers will mock the virgin birth, clinging to their proud ‘wisdom’—the same who trace their lineage to apes. Yet We will open some eyes; they will see Our signature in creation and recognize true Wisdom when they see Us.
“Sustain Jesus in His true humanity. Let Him grow in wisdom and stature, experiencing the fallen world’s hatred while remaining spotless among sinners.
“His task surpasses Adam’s. He will fulfill the dominion mandate and bear the curse Adam incurred—plus the accumulated guilt of every descendant who has heaped sin upon sin.
“Their debt is astronomical. No one could repay even a fraction in endless ages. Worse, many urge others to add to the impossible burden.
“Protect Him, Holy Spirit, until wicked hands offer Him up—unwittingly providing the sacrifice that atones for their own crime.
“We will defeat death with the very weapon death wielded: the curse itself. The ancient rebel underestimated Our sovereignty. His schemes are dust before Us. We have plans for him.
“Son, though You leave heaven’s glory, Our Spirit will never leave You. Lean on Him—as Your people will learn to do. Let them see You praying without ceasing; when You return, You will intercede at My right hand. Teach them to call Me ‘Abba,’ for We adopt them as sons and daughters, chosen before time began.
“I delight in their small voices crying out. Their ‘giant’ troubles shrink when I draw them near. I love being their Father—that is why We do this.
“They have lived as slaves too long. Teach them sonship. When they slip back into chains, Holy Spirit, draw them to their Brother-King. He will clothe them in royal robes: ‘These are yours because you belong to My household. Not all receive them—only family does.’
“And the Spirit will say: ‘Wear these so you resemble Me. The Father is pleased with Me; clothed in My righteousness, He delights in you too.’
“When you stumble, He sees Me. When We finish, you will be conformed to My image—dressed in garments that never fade or stain.
“Cast off the filthy rags of slavery. The old clothes will be burned; only what is incorruptible remains.
“Holy Spirit, remind them of all We have done so they trust Us as intended from the beginning. Sin deceived them into self-deification; We warned, but the lie was strong. Only You can heal their rebellion by continually turning them to the Son—the only life that conquers death.
“Are We agreed? The fullness of time has come. Let Us bring Our people home.”
So the great drama begins. Angels watch in wonder as the Triune God takes ruined lives—some proud of their self-sufficiency, others broken—and gently imparts life, banishing darkness, instilling truth. We know each one intimately; We knit them in the womb. Our purpose stands unshaken through every fullness of time.
There remains one final fullness—when the Son returns on a white horse. That day approaches. Look up. Be ready. Be found in Him.
Soli Deo Gloria
