Christ as Prophet: Revealing God’s Will for Edification and Salvation
The office of a prophet is to communicate divine revelation, and Christ, as the ultimate prophet, reveals the whole will of God to His church. This revelation is not confined to a single period but extends across all ages, ensuring that believers in every generation have access to God’s truth for their edification and salvation.
Christ’s prophetic ministry is characterized by its diversity of administration. He reveals God’s will through various means, including direct teachings, parables, miracles, and the inspiration of Scripture. John 1:18 (NASB) states, “No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.” This verse highlights Jesus’ unique position as the one who reveals the Father to humanity.
The Old Testament prophets also played a crucial role in preparing the way for Christ’s prophetic ministry. 1 Peter 1:10-12 (NASB) explains that the prophets “made careful searches and inquiries, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.” Their prophecies pointed to the coming Messiah and His redemptive work.

Hebrews 1:1-2 (NASB) summarizes the progressive nature of God’s revelation, stating that “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.” This verse emphasizes that Christ is the culmination of God’s revelation, the one in whom all previous revelations find their fulfillment.
Christ’s prophetic ministry is not limited to His earthly life but continues through the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. John 15:15 (NASB) reveals the intimate relationship between Jesus and His followers, stating, “No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.” This verse emphasizes that Christ shares the Father’s revelation with His disciples, making them partakers in divine knowledge.
The Westminster Confession of Faith affirms that “Christ executeth the office of a prophet, in his revealing to the church, in all ages, by his Spirit and word, in divers ways of administration, the whole will of God, in all things concerning their edification and salvation.” This statement encapsulates the comprehensive nature of Christ’s prophetic ministry, encompassing all aspects of believers’ lives and leading them towards spiritual maturity and eternal life.In conclusion, Christ’s prophetic ministry is a continuous revelation of God’s will for the edification and salvation of His church. Through His teachings, the Holy Spirit, and the Word of God, believers are equipped to live a life that honors God and reflects His kingdom. As John 20:31 (NASB) reminds us, “but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.”
