Week 2 Summary: “The Israel of God”

Week 2 • The Israel of God

Galatians 6:15-16 • “The Israel of God”

This is a summary overview of our lesson. It is intended to help you catch up if you missed the class and will summarize the main points touched on in that session.

We Opened in Prayer

We thanked God for the day, for gathering us together, and especially for His Son Jesus — whose accomplished work and freely given eternal reward we celebrate. We asked that the Spirit would shape our minds and hearts by God’s Word.

Review and Setting the Stage

This was the first core lesson in the ten-week study (following the introductory session). We focused on the phrase “the Israel of God” from Galatians 6:16. Participants were encouraged to read the weekly post in advance, which included the full Galatians 6 passage and preparatory questions.

Galatians 6:15-16 – The Rule and the Israel of God

“For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God.”

The “rule” Paul refers to is the new creation in Christ. Paul blesses those who walk by this rule — a largely Gentile church — and calls them the Israel of God.

Key takeaway: Paul is not speaking of two groups (the Church and Israel). He identifies one people: the new creation people are the Israel of God. This directly challenges ethnic-only or dispensational views.

Romans 9:6-8 – Not All Israel Is Israel

“For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel… it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.”

True belonging has always been by God’s election and promise, not mere physical descent. Paul traces the promise back to Abraham and ultimately to Christ, the singular Seed.

Patterns in Redemptive History

We traced the recurring pattern: embryonic Israel (one man of faith — Abraham) → growth into a nation → birth in the Exodus (a new creation event). This mirrors other biblical patterns of election (Isaac over Ishmael, second Adam, etc.).

The story of Israel was never ultimately about ethnicity in isolation — it always pointed forward to Christ and the new creation people.

Mark 1:14-15 – The Gospel of the Kingdom

Jesus proclaimed: “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

The kingdom is not postponed. It arrived in the King Himself. This challenges any idea of the Church as a “parenthesis” in God’s plan.

The Land Promise and Chiasm in Galatians 6

The land pointed back to Eden and forward to restored fellowship with God — fulfilled in Christ (“God with us”).

Galatians 6:15-16 forms a beautiful chiasm with new creation at the center, driving home that the new creation people are the Israel of God.

Why the Christ-Centered Lens Matters

The entire Old Testament system (temple, sacrifices, land, kingship) pointed to Christ. When the reality arrived, the shadows gave way. We must see everything through Him to avoid fragmented or speculative readings.

We Closed in Prayer

Thanking God for masterfully using all of history to tell the redemptive story, for reconciling us into one people through Christ, and for the sure hope that lies ahead.

We’re glad you’re here! See you in class as we continue exploring The Israel of God together.
